THE BMBA INVITATIONAL
CENTRAL DISTRICTICTS - REPRESENTATIVE COMPETITIONS
REP BASKETBALL DONE DIFFERENTLY!

The BMBA invitational is an exciting new junior basketball competition format that has an entire focus on player and team development. Our goal is to form six team competitions in each age group  that will be played across a school term. The intention is to grow this across a two-terms as more teams enter.

The Central Districts competitions is going to be our new BETTER version of representative basketball to be conducted initially at the Stonnington Sports Centre on Friday nights. Unlike current representative competitions eligibility to enter these competitions will be made available to “ALL” basketball Associations, Clubs, Schools and development programs. All each basketball entity has to do is to satisfy us that they can meet certain criteria.

To begin with, our one-term format will include six teams playing each other in a round-robin format where every team plays each other at least once. This will also allow teams, clubs and basketball programs to join at any time as they find out about this new competition and we grow our numbers. The ambition is that from term three in 2025 we will started a proper representative season.

In our first two teams (i.e. Terms One and Two 2025), while these games will have a scoreboard and a team that wins and a team that loses, no ladders will be kept. The entire purpose of these lead-up round-robin games is targeted at the development of players. We want coaches to be focused on development and not winning. In this format, having your players try something new in game conditions whether it be a new dribble, a shot attempt or running a play will not impact on your team whether you win or lose.

Instead, coaches will be encouraged to use these games to develop and educate their players for an end of term round robin tournament, where over two weekends the same teams will play in competitive games where ladders will be kept and the top two teams will play off in a grand final to crown that term/season champions.

Ultimately, our preference is for a two-term season, where teams will play each other across fifteen rounds and then participate in an end-of-season round-robin tournament. Through this, instead of grading we can assess teams between seasons and engage in some promotion and regulation to improve the balance of our competitions.

These are just some of the highlights of what we will be offering to teams, clubs, schools and programs interested in representative basketball. Join our mailing list to receive further updates by clicking below
