Welcome to the official newsletter of the BMBA Templar Warriors. After being forced into hibernation along with most sports but we are now back and there is so much happening we want to spread the word, to all our our BMBA players, participants, families, friends and everybody else who may be interested in receiving a high standard of coaching and training.
Enjoy the read, enjoy the updates and like us get excited about where the BMBA Templar Warriors are headed.
We certainly are.
Play the video on the left for a major BMBA announcement for Term Two about after school training.
Over the first week of the April School holidays, the BMBA conducted its first-ever school holiday camp at St Michael’s Grammar. It was a HUGE success!
A great venue, with lots of kids, great coaching and most importantly plenty of skills, games and fun. The kids at camp were brilliant, they were enthusiastic, keen to learn, had plenty of fun and were extremely polite. It was a pleasure and a privilege to conduct this camp for them.
Our focus now turns to the commencement of after school training this term, also at St Michael’s College. We will also be conducting school holiday camps in the June Holidays at both St Michael’s and Wellington Secondary College in Mulgrave.
These events allow us to visit schools to conduct FREE clinics for their students as we did at Elsternwick’s St Josephs Primary School. Through their brilliant sports teacher Louise Howell, they supported this camp with great numbers, which will allow us to continue those FREE clinics. In doing so, it attracts potential new players to the BMBA and your child’s teams, making us stronger both on and off the court. It also allows to recruit more high quality coaches into the program to coach your child and their team.
For you to support these initiatives, just enrol your kids in our camps and after-school training. While your doing that spread the word to friends to have their kids get involved. The more kids we bring into the program, the more we can do, the more we can offer and the stronger we will become.
Check out our digital poster/flyer and video promo below, you can share this through social media or just save/print and share it.
As per our announcement above the BMBA is excited to announce that it will be conducting after school training at St Michael’s Grammar in the coming term.
These sessions will be held on Wednesdays and Thursdays and will involve two sessions, one between 6:00 pm and 7:30 pm and the second between 7:30 pm and 9:00 pm. The earlier session will be targeted for primary school students and the later session at Secondary College students. Both sessions though will be open to all students.
This term the sessions will be conducted at St Michael’s and in term three we will also be looking to conduct these sessions at Wellington Secondary College as well. We also hope to come to similar arrangements with further schools this term. To say that we are excited about this development is an understatement. The main goal of the BMBA is to bring elite level coaching to juniors that wouldn’t otherwise receive it.
Now that we have these venue and times locked in, we can begin that journey and build something very special in the coming months and years.
For more information on these sessions please contact me via my details at the foot of this page.
After our successful April Holiday camp, we are pleased to advise that we will now be holding holiday camps in the June holidays at both St Michael’s Grammar in St Kilda and Wellington Secondary College in Mulgrave.
In our next edition next week, we will be publishing details, dates and a registration page for these events.
The BMBA Templar Warriors will be entering teams into the Southern Basketball Associations Spring Phase season which commences in term 3 this year.
We would look to enter both boys and girls teams where there is enough interest generated across all age groups and competitions.
Competitions ages groups and days are as follows:
Now that restrictions have been lifted and our Canadian ALL STAR import has arrived our clinic bookings have taken off.
We have run clinics already at St Joseph’s PS in Elsternwick, Malvern Central PS, and St Kilda PS. We have clinics and expressions of interest for clinics at McKinnon PS, Our Lady of Assumption PS in Cheltenham, Huntingdale PS and Black Rock PS. We will also be returning to both St Joseph’s and St Kilda PS for further clinics.
If your child’s primary or secondary school would be interested in having either Joe or I or the both of us attend to conduct a clinic, then please pass on our contacts for them to get in touch. Alternatively, pass their details on to us and we will contact them.
The BMBA is on the verge of making another exciting announcement in the coming weeks.
We are currently talking to USA contacts to organise tour opportunities for secondary college students with basketball ambitions to tour the USA through the BMBA program. In these tours, participants will play in tournaments, against schools and visit some of USA basketball’s best colleges.
This ensures older kids who become a part of the BMBA Templar Warriors now will not only have the exciting opportunity to tour the USA but also a potential pathway into college basketball in the USA.
We will have more information and updates on this development in the very near future.
Now that we have high-standard venues to conduct our high-level, independent training and coaching programs, we need participants to register. In a very short time we have put together an amazing basketball product, but to nourish and grow it, we need people to register their kids into the program.
You can help us to build this program so it remains in place for your child for years to come by spreading the word about our program. You can right-click on the images below to share them on social media, or you can left-click to go to a PDF version that you can print and distribute to friends, families and associates.
We are pleased to announce that Knight Sport, Moorabbin has come on board to support our efforts in conducting FREE clinics at Primary schools.
Knight Sport will now be our official supplier of basketballs and equipment for our FREE primary school clinics. This is vitally important for us to ensure that we have some quality equipment at every FREE school clinic that we conduct.

Our All-Star Canadian import, Joe Davis, continues his dominant form in the Division two competition of men’s BIG V basketball.
Before the Easter break, Joe had a double header weekend with his Pakenham Warriors. In his first game, he led his team to a strong 21 point win against the Whittlesea Pacers with 32 points, 15 rebounds and 3 assists. Joe shot at an incredible 68% from the field.
The next day Joe had 21 points, 8 rebounds and 2 assists against Mildura in a 15 point win. These wins have seen Joe’s Pakenham team storm to the top of the ladder and Joe move to the top spot in the league for points per game at 24.83.
We always anticipated Joe would perform strongly in this league, but he is even exceeding our lofty expectations. Now you can have him visit your school to conduct FREE clinics for your students.
Joe is also killing it off the court through our clinics and at our camps. We are lucky to have him.
Max Bright from our U16 Boys has always been committed to his basketball. This year though he has taken that commitment to another level when he was presented with an opportunity to join an U18 Rep team with Hawthorn Magic.
Max now travels three times a week to training that involves a 90 minute round trip on most occasions. On top of that Max is playing out of his age group. This has ensured that this will be a challenging opportunity for Max, but one that he will be able to learn from and grow with.
That has certainly been the case.
Max’s Hawthorn team has encountered quite a bit of injury, sickness and player unavailability which has given Max even more court time and opportunity to play than even he had probably been expecting.
For Max, this experience will ensure he can keep developing his game by growing his skill level and game knowledge. In doing so he will ultimately help our BMBA program improve by bringing back those skills and that knowledge to his BMBA team.
This represents what the BMBA is all about. Through quality coaching presenting players with opportunities they might not have otherwise enjoyed. Well done Max and good luck for the rest of the season.
Our U16 BMBA Warrior boys have experienced some hardships over the years, with training outdoors in the elements, injuries, player fluctuations and varying results in their domestic competitions.
Throughout it all, they have approached it with a great attitude and work ethic. Despite these challenges they did so well last season that they were promoted to the A grade division in the Southern Basketball Association’s domestic competition.
Most teams in this competition have multiple rep players and players with height size and athleticism. Our boys unfortunately don’t have a lot of that, so this season has been a struggle, but at the same time an important one in their development. Despite having limited numbers all season (refer to our article below), our boys have acquitted themselves well and have been competitive throughout this A grade season.
So it was great to reward these boys last week with their first training run at St Michaels Grammar where they could enjoy a high-standard training facility, where they didn’t have to worry about strong winds affecting their shots, what the weather was going to do, the light getting too dark and whether they had to fight with others to access those outdoor courts.
Instead, the boys not only were indoors out of the weather elements and with all the lighting they needed, but they also enjoyed a blue-tooth connection to the coach’s mobile to have some soothing music in the background as they trained.
There is no more deserving group of boys for this reward. Enjoy your new training home fellas.
The BMBA Warriors are looking for boys born in either 2007 or 2008 that would be interested in playing in A grade domestic competition while receiving excellent, knowledge and experienced coaching.
Our U16 Boys teams have done an outstanding job to make the A grade competition at the Sandringham Basketball Association, but are restricted due to only having 6 players. We are currently looking for at least two more players.
So if you know of boys born in either 2007 or 2008 that are motivated and looking for an opportunity to play at a high level while receiving some excellent coaching, get them in contact with our head coach Bob Mann via his mobile 0490 823 400 or his email bob_mann@bmba.net.au
We chose the Templars as we believe some values are eternal.
We don’t just want our symbol/mascot to project strength and tenacity, we want it to be something that defines our culture and the values we want to embed amongst our participants and players.
While the Templar Knights were fierce Medieval Warriors, they also lived by a code of honour, respect, courage and they dedicated their lives to self-sacrifice in the pursuit of servitude towards others.
We believe that this represents the culture we want to build within our program perfectly.
For our older groups, we teach them more through simulated match situations and scrimmage games. Drills are still used but with the mindset of using these drills to develop skills for games situations and then putting them into those game situations.
While still focusing on enjoyment and fun, older participants are normally looking for more challenging training and coaching with a greater emphasis on competition and challenges with the skills being taught.
Our training is designed for both boys and girls. Where numbers permit we organise girls into “girl only” groups which make things more enjoyable for the girls. We also design different skills challenges for the girl’s groups.
In the unusual event (especially in the older groups) that a girl or girls would prefer to join in with the boys, we would look at that situation where capabilities permit it.
Of course, our training is open for boys as well. As with the girls, we look to form them into boys-only groups. This again is dependent on the number of enrolments we have.
These groups are sorted along both age and capability lines as well as keeping kids in their friendship groups where possible. Most importantly, as best as possible we place participants in groups where they are comfortable with their current skill level and where they can obtain the most enjoyment from their participation in the BMBA program.
We also have groups for those players who are more motivated and wish to obtain more serious training to improve their game. We can either form them into a separate group or embed them in a group and simply provide them with more challenging drills and skills for them to use and learn from.
They will receive condensed high-level coaching and drills that will challenge them and help them improve their current skills considerably or learn new ones for future games and opportunities.
Our Coaches are predominately players Bob has brought through with him via his caching career. They all have predominately graduated through Bob’s representative basketball programs. We also recruit coaches from Universities and schools who have either played or coached at a high level. All our coaches are trained in the drills and basketball programs that we implement and are supervised through all our sessions. Naturally, all of them will have to obtain and provide Working with Children Checks to be able to work with us, where they are old enough to have one.
At the moment we operate from outdoor school courts due to Covid-19, but we are now working to secure an indoor court now that schools have reopened from lockdowns.
We are looking for a venue in the South East Suburbs of Melbourne, preferably within the boundaries of the cities of Glen Eira, Bayside or Kingston.
If your school fits that bill and wants to help us have kids in our community become involved in a positive recreation and program while making some revenue for your school, then contact us to discuss the possibilities.
We are now ready and willing to go. So book us in to visit your school to promote our sport, our program and the possibilities we can present for many of your students.
