Our BMBA Templar Warrior Under-14 Boys Rep team broke the ice for its first win in this current winter season. Having been very competitive throughout the grading, the boys hadn’t yet achieved their first win. Despite this, their form in recent weeks had been gradually improving, and the belief amongst the group was that their first win was just around the corner.
That’s just what happened when the boys played their opening game of the “real’ season last Saturday. After an even first half, we were trailing Berwick by two points. Berwick had some genuine height, which was giving our team some problems. Despite this, our boys were holding strong on the defensive end, but as has been the case, we were struggling to score at the other end.
The boys actually led most of the first half, only to give up that lead in the last few minutes of the first half. What our efforts in the first half did give the boys was the beleif they could win. With Zac Chester and Bill Pham leading the way on offence and youngster Isaac McDonald inspiring his older teammates with some great defensive efforts, the boys began to dominate the second half, holding their opponents to just 3 points in 15 minutes in the second half.
George Zhang and Bill Pham were beating the Berwick press soundly and providing scoring opportunities to themselves and their teammates. Zach Chester was the biggest beneficiary, receiving some great assists from both George and Bill. To do this, Zach had to be strong inside against the Berwick Talls, and he was certainly that to finish with 17 points for the match.
With 49 seconds to go, our boys had the match in hand, leading 25-18, before having to overcome a scare when Berwick landed two threes to make the scoreboard look closer than it looked. George Zhang ensured our win with a clutch free throw to ensure we nailed our first win for the season.
This win was a testament to the work that the boys have put in despite having to endure a losing streak as they attempted to qualify for higher grades during grading. With the monkey off the back we are looking forward to the boys playing with growing confidence in coming matches.
